The Pros and Cons of Copper Vs. Aluminum Gutters

Aluminum vs copper gutters
Did you ever wonder what the difference is between aluminum and copper gutters?  The fact is that both aluminum and copper do a good job for the purpose of protecting your house from weather such as rain and snow.  However, aluminum and copper have different pros and cons.  If you are unsure about which one is the best for you, read further, as we explain the differences between the two.

Aluminum Gutter Pros and Cons

The most popular rain gutter material is aluminum.  If you want protection that is dependable and reasonably priced, aluminum gutters are your best options. Actually, aluminum gutters are pretty inexpensive compared to copper gutters.  If price is a consideration for you when choosing gutter materials, then aluminum can save you thousands of dollars.  Aluminum gutters are covered with an enamel that protects against rust so they come in many different color designs.  They are also lightweight and a little easier to install.

But, aluminum gutters have cons to be aware of too.  They rust faster than copper gutters, especially if you don’t take care of the enamel layer.  Also, high temperatures can be harmful to aluminum gutters, and so can temperatures that change quickly.  Basically, they do not have the longevity that copper gutters have.

Copper Gutters Pros and Cons

Copper gutters are known for adding style to your home, as they are a bit more decorative than aluminum gutters.  Copper has a beautiful finish that adds a little dramatic flair and beauty of your house.

Also, copper gutters do not rust as easily as aluminum gutters, nor does it crack or wear out as fast as aluminum.  So, if maintained properly, copper gutters can last up to 50 years without needing to be replaced or repaired.

But, copper gutters do have drawbacks, the main one being price.  Copper gutters cost also more than half of what aluminum gutters cost.  Plus, if you use copper gutters you have to use copper as the material for all the fasteners, nails and fittings too.  Unfortunately, when using copper for your gutters, the whole system has to be made of copper because other materials like aluminum with corrode the copper. So, an all copper gutter system will only increase the overall price.

Also, copper gutter systems must be tailor made for your house.  That is a pro in the sense that that often means no seams which cuts down on future leaks.  But, that also means you will have to find a knowledgeable installation person who has worked with copper before, adding further costs.  And, copper gutter systems will take longer to install than aluminum.  Copper is more difficult to work with than aluminum, as it requires more soldering at its joints.  Therefore, you really need someone who has worked with copper before.  If you are looking for your gutter system to be built or replaced fast, a copper system may not be your best bet.  Aluminum systems can be built or replaced much quicker.
