How To Work With A Home Improvement Contractor

Working with a Denver gutter company contractor
You might think after you hire a contractor, that your job is done, and all that is left for you to do is to wait until he or she is done with the work they were hired to do.  But it is better for you to stay involved with the project, and to open the lines of communication with your contractor. Below is a list of simple tips that can help you work with your contractor.

Establish Open Communication

The first thing you want to ask your contractor is how he or is available to communicate.  That means deciding on the method that you both prefer using to stay in touch.  Options include text, phone calls, emails, etc.  It is also a good idea to communicate face-to-face every now and then, so try to schedule a good time for that weekly.

Stick to Your Budget
Before the project starts, come up with a budget, and share it with your contractor in a clear way.  You shouldn’t be shy about communicating your budget with the contractor.  By letting them see the budget, your contractor can plan the project based on the numbers, and then work within that framework.  Avoid allowances, because that will give the contractor the go ahead to bid on items as they come up, which might take you over budget.  Finally, the more detailed your instructions are, the easier it will be for the contractor craft a plan to stay in budget.

Keep a Project Journal
Keeping a project journal is incredibly useful when working with a contractor. - The journal will help you keep track of the dates your contractor told you the work will be done by, and that helps you see the progress of the project as it unfolds.  You can use your project journal to jot down questions for your contractor, so you don’t forget them when you have face-to-face time.  You can also note any suggestions or ideas you have for your contractor to consider.

Write Down Any Changes
If an issue arises that will add more work to the project, you will want to keep a close record of that as well.  Have it noted in your contract that any changes to the project will be done in writing, that means all bids have to be in writing first.  It also requires your contractor to give you a written description of the change to the project, that includes a fixed price for what it will cost.  Ant good contractor will understand why it must be written, and will be able to handle the changes with grace.

Be a Respectful Customer
Please be a good customer for the contractor.  Try to be as respectful as you can, and accommodate the contractor as much as they need.  You will receive good work from the contractor if he or she likes their job.  Greet them in a friendly way and use their first name.  Complement their work if they are doing a good job.  Give them a bathroom to use, and provide refreshments like water or soda when it is hot outside.  By being accommodating you can motivate the contractor to give his or her best effort.

When working with a contractor to replace your gutters in Denver, it is best to get a couple of referrals and and see the quality for work they have done.  It is also important to make sure that they are a local company and service all their customers in the city you live in.
