Gutters are often an overlooked part of the home that can have an impact on your property's value. When considering new gutters there are important choices to be made including material, shape, and cost, but performance and quality should not be overlooked. This will reward you over time with low maintenance and lasting value.

Gutters are an essential component of your home’s drainage system and are subject to wear and damage like other exterior features. Regular cleaning and maintenance of your gutters will help them get the maximum lifespan. If your gutters show signs of wear like leaks, cracks, sagging or pulling away, then it may be time to replace them.

Gutter Materials

There are many types and styles of gutters available today, constructed with primary materials being copper, aluminum, steel, galvanized steel, vinyl, and zinc.
  • Copper gutters cost substantially more than other metals but are an extremely appealing and upscale choice.
  • Galvanized steel gutters are relatively strong and are coated with a layer of zinc but are more susceptible to rusting.
  • Steel gutters also are available with a coating of zinc and aluminum, which helps eliminate rusting, but is more expensive.
  • Zinc gutters are strong and durable, and normally does not require painting or finishing.
  • Aluminum is the most prevalent inexpensive material used and offers many advantages from others. It is lightweight, corrosion resistant, and available in a variety of colors.
  • Vinyl gutters are another inexpensive option. They are not as durable as metal and break down over time with exposure to sunlight, resulting in replacement more often. However, vinyl is available in a wide range of colors to match many vinyl-siding. Additionally, the rubber seals used to join the sections together can become brittle and leak.

Gutter Styles

If you are in the market for new gutters not only do you have to choose a material but you also have to select among a range of shapes, or profiles.
  • K-style gutters are the most popular and are also known as the ogee gutters. These are similar in shape to decorative crown molding.
  • Half-round gutters have fallen out of favor because it has an open construction with the open side facing the roof, which easily clogs with debris and then overflows.
  • European-style gutter systems are generally half-round gutters made from materials that weather more naturally, like copper.
  • Fascia gutters have a smooth face that achieve the same purpose as fascia boards, hiding edges of the rafter tails from view.

All gutters are constructed in either sections for regular gutters, or seamless long pieces for seamless gutters. The drawback of sectional gutter systems is that the joints must be sealed but eventually leak. Seamless gutters, on the other hand, have seams only at the corners, which reduces leaks and requires low maintenance.
With so many choices available you can create a quality and attractive gutter system for your home. If you have questions or want a reliable professional company for your installation call Colorado Seamless Gutters today!
